What products can you use in a whirlpool bath?

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 28th September 2021

Relaxing in your whirlpool bath is incredibly beneficial for your mental and physical wellbeing, but what if you want to crank it up a notch and add some additional products into the water. This is a common and very important question because when it comes to bath products, you do need to make sure you get ones that are whirlpool bath-friendly. In this article we'll show what's safe for your luxury spa bath and what you should avoid.

Low-foam bubble bath

For regular baths, adding some foaming bubble bath is often considered a staple and the height of luxury. You pour some in at the beginning of the bath and and watch it bubble up as the water cascades from the taps and fills up the bath.

However, in a whirlpool bath where the water jets can get quite aggressive, adding some foaming bubble bath can quickly spiral out of control. The water will get agitated by the jets and the foam is likely to go on overdrive, spilling over the sides and causing considerable mess in your bathroom. While the excessive foam won't damage your bath, it will take something that was supposed to be relaxing and turn it into a tiring chore.

Instead, you can opt for some low-foam bubble bath that is specially-formulated for use in whirlpool baths. These are usually scented so you can still have that traditional-smelling bubble bath but with the high levels of foam. They usually have just enough bubbles to be enjoyable but not excessively so.

Bath salts

Many people like to use essential oils in their regular baths as they usually smell good and they can often help to make your bath feel even more relaxing. While these oils are great for a normal bath, they are not so good for the inner workings of your whirlpool bath. The oils can get into the pipework and leave a film or residue inside. After a while this can cause blockages in the jets and the filter and cause issues around the water draining properly.

By sticking to bath salts like Epsom salts or dead sea salts which don't contain any oils, you'll feel the relaxing benefits of exfoliation but without the risk of clogging up the components of your bath. (Please note, these salts are good for use in plain water whirlpool baths, but are not recommended in chlorinated hot tubs as they can upset the PH level of the water, causing possible hot tub corrosion.)

Anti-foam/Defoamer

Those of you who haven't put any kind of product into your whirlpool bath may notice some foam that appears on the surface or around the edge of the waterline in your bath. This can often be caused by the natural oils from your skin or the residue from other products such as make-up, moisturiser, fake tan or sun screen.

By getting some good quality anti-foam and adding a couple of capfuls into your bath, any bubbles or cloudy water caused by the above skin products will be cleared pretty quickly and will make your water feel much cleaner again.
