What exactly are bathtubs made of?

What exactly are bathtubs made of?

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 21st April 2020

A bathtub is something you most likely see everyday, but a common question people have about bathtubs regarding the material that they're made from.

In this article, we'll look at some of the most common materials that most modern bathtubs are made from.

1. Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic
Perhaps the cheapest of all bathtub materials, fibreglass coated with a special resin is very light and easy to install and repair. However, it is prone to discolouring and cracking, which explains why it's at the economical end of bathtub ranges.

2. Acrylic
The most common form of bathtub manufacturing material. Acrylic tubs come in a massive variety of sizes, colours and styles and are generally considered a good all-rounder, due to their relative light weight, ease to shape and good durability.

3. Enamelled Steel
Common for freestanding baths, steel is shaped and then covered in a thick porcelain enamel coating to give a lovely smooth finish. They are very easy to clean, long lasting and, although heavier than acrylic, they are still light enough to be installed without too much complication.

4. Cast iron
Cast iron baths are a more old-school version of steel baths and are also covered in the thick enamel common to their more modern counterpart., making them incredibly durable. Cast iron retains heat better than the other materials, so your baths will stay warm longer. However, they are the most expensive bath material and are very heavy to install.

5. Composite
Composite baths are manufactured using a resin and some sort of stone that has been ground up, most commonly quartz, granite or limestone. The styles can vary widely but among the most popular are the natural-looking finish for those who like a stone look to their bathrooms. These are usually more expensive than acrylic baths but less expensive than those made of cast iron.
