Things to do at home to relax

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 2nd April 2020

During these challenging times, you are probably spending a lot more time at home than under normal circumstances.

While it can be a good opportunity to catch up on some box sets and movies, the novelty of being stuck inside wears off and can even become stressful.

In this article we'll take a look at some fun and relaxing things you can do at home during these times of social distancing.

1. Read a book

For many of us, reading is one of those things that we know we should do, but often don't make the time to do it.

Most of us have a book on the shelf that we've been meaning to get around to reading and now is the perfect time to get started.

Once you get into a really good book, the feeling of being immersed in the plot and characters is a fantastic way to forget about the outside world and truly relax.

Reading a fun work of fiction before bed is also a great way to relax your brain and have a replenishing night's sleep.

2. Write down your thoughts

The act of writing down what's in your head can be very therapeutic and a brilliant method of destressing and relaxing.

It doesn't necessarily mean jotting down your darkest secrets (though it can do), but even just writing down what you did that day can help relax your mind.

It may be regarding what you've achieve or would like to achieve in the future. It could simply be a to-do list of chores around the house.

Whatever you choose to write down, the actual feeling of putting pen to paper on a regular basis can be an effective way of clearing your mind and organising your thoughts.

3. Listen to your favourite music

Putting on some music that you like is one of the easiest ways you can relax, whether it's via streaming, CDs or putting on a vinyl.

Relaxing music is often low key and ambient; the kind you might hear when you go for a massage in a spa. However, while that might work for some, the best way to relax is by choosing music that you like.

If you enjoy thrash metal then that would be as equally relaxing to you as Mozart might be for someone else. Whatever type of music you connect with and the positive memories that music generates is what's perfect for you.

Obviously try to avoid upsetting the neighbours, but stick on your favourite tunes and feeling the positive energy flooding back into you mind and body.

4. Have a hot bath

Taking a soak in a warm bath is one of the simplest relaxing pleasures you can experience in the confines of your own home.

Closing the bathroom door, lighting some candles and pouring some scented oils into the water instantly creates a soothing atmosphere.

Fortunately, all the relaxing things we have mentioned previously can also be done while you're having a nice hot bath.

If you're lucky enough to have a luxury whirlpool bath then the bubbles and cyclical LED lights can greatly enhance an already relaxing experience.

Lay back and rest your head on a dedicated bath pillow and allow your worries to drift away, your muscles to relax and your mind to transport to another dimension.
