Taking a hot bath after exercise

Taking a hot bath after exercise

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 10th May 2022

We've all heard the stories of well-known sport stars finishing off their day's work with a plunge into a freezing cold ice bath. While this seems unnecessarily unpleasant, the benefits of aiding recovery do seem to be clear and worth it for prolonging their careers.

Some new research that has recently been published has shown that taking a hot bath after exercise can also be very beneficial to our bodies. The peer-reviewed study suggested that taking a hot bath for 6 days after exercise helped to induce heat acclimatisation, enabling athletes to perform almost 5% better in raised temperatures. So if you think you will be exercising in the heat, then taking a hot bath may well improve your ability to adjust and improve performance levels.

Some benefits of a hot whirlpool bath

So while it's been established that hot baths in general can help recovery and performance in exercise, there are some additional health benefits that may well be associated with having a hot bath that contains whirlpool jets.

Flexibility

It's a common feeling among many that after working out or doing something that raises your heartbeat, easing into a nice hot whirlpool bath can really ease aching muscles.

While some might write this off as being psychological or an old wives tale, the heat from the water and the flow generated by the jet system can increase the extensibility of your connective tissues and muscles. This can result in an improved range of motion and greater flexibility.

Circulation

Another really positive benefit from getting into a warm spa bath is the increased blood flow and circulation right around your body. A whole range of health benefits are all improved by having a better circulation of blood around your body, including joint pain and muscle relaxation

The great combo of air and water assists in to opening up our veins and arteries which increases the space through which blood can flow.

Healthy skin

Taking regular exercise is often linked improved skin health and this can be further increased by taking a hot bath after you're done.

As well as happening during exercise, your oxygen intake also increases when you take a hot whirlpool bath. This is beneficial as it drags the toxins in your body up to the surface, pulling them out of the skin. This often results in skin that is softer, glowing and generally much more healthy.

General relaxation

Exercise creates it's own form of mental relaxation, but you are technically putting your body under stress (albeit healthy) if your exercise is moderate or more, so taking a hot bath afterwards is great at relaxing your body and your mind at the same time.

People have spa weekends for good reason, due to the feeling of overall wellbeing and nullifying stress. Forgetting about your problems and shutting out the outside world through the use of exercise followed by thermotherapy can often feel like you've been given a new lease of life.

A luxury whirlpool bath is an important part of this process and the hydromassage qualities provided by a such a bath can have a serious rejuvenating effect on the body.
