How to hide pipes in a bathroom

How to hide pipes in a bathroom

If installing a whirlpool bath in your bathroom, then one of the things you might want to consider is a method of how you can hide your pipework. Even if not related to a whirlpool bath, pipes on display in a bathroom are often considered unsightly, despite the important role they provide in moving water from one place to another. If this is something you feel strongly about then this article will suggest a few ways you can conceal the pipes in your bathroom.

Box them in

A very common way of hiding pipework is by boxing them in. You may have seen this in other areas of you home already, such as in the kitchen or a downstairs toilet. If pipes run horizontally close to the floor or vertically close to a corner then they are perfect candidates for creating a neat box around them with pieces of wood.

If you paint your newly-created box the same colour as your skirting board or walls, then you'll do a great job of disguising the boxing and making it look much more part of the room. If you have some basic woodworking skills then this is a job you can try yourself for very little cost.

Not everyone likes this solution as it can feel a little clunky and make the room look slightly smaller. However, it's a cheap and easy way of hiding pipes regardless of whether you do it it or get someone professional in to do it for you.

Pipe-hiding skirting board

If you've got pipes that run horizontally very close to the floor (such as radiator or heated towel rail pipes) then it's possible to buy specially-adapted skirting boards that are designed for hiding pipes behind them.

If you were already planning to install skirting board into your bathroom anyway, then getting the kind that can accommodate pipes would be a fantastic way of solving the issue of exposed pipes without going to a great deal of extra expense and inconvenience.

The pipe-accommodating skirting board looks just like regular skirting board from the front but actually contains a recessed area on the back. When the skirting board is installed, the pipes neatly slot into this recessed area, fitting flush against the wall and neatly hiding your pipes. Well worth considering if this solutions suits your problem.

Bathroom furniture

Wall-mounted basin and toilet

If the issue in your bathroom is the pipework that connects to your bathroom suite, then opting for furniture that hides pipework as part of the design is definitely something to think about.

Minimalist toilets and cistern units are a great way of hiding pipework and giving your bathroom an uncluttered look that's easy to keep clean. The toilets tend to be straight sided, hiding the toilet stem, and the cistern is designed to hide the pipework and appear like a streamlined unit or even as part of the wall. These are becoming increasingly popular due to their stylish design and ease of maintenance.

Vanity units are also becoming more commonplace, particularly the ones that incorporate a sink and cupboard in one stylish unit. These types of units dispense with the unsightly basin stem altogether, instead forming a storage cupboard underneath with a basin slotted into the top. The storage is very convenient, especially in small bathrooms, and the pipes to the taps are also hidden behind the unit.

It's also considering wall hung toilets and basins which hang off the wall and don't touch the floor. Many of these have pipes that are hidden in the wall and the fact they aren't connected to the floor gives the impression of space, as wall as being really simple to keep clean.

Put in a fake wall

If you've got the budget then you might want to consider getting in a professional builder to put in a fake wall into your bathroom. Boxing pipes in is a fantastic solution but having a purpose-built wall behind which you can hide pipes is always going to look superior stylistically.

A fake wall or two really opens up the possibilities when it comes to plumbing as you could have tapes coming out of the wall in your shower or on your sink, or a toilet cistern hidden in the wall, giving you a beautiful minimalist style to the room.

Fakes walls also enable you to include other luxuries in your bathroom such as an array of lighting or a bluetooth speaker system.
