Chrome is a fantastic material that really looks great on bathroom taps. However, if you don't keep on top of maintenance and allow the chrome to lose it's shine, your taps can become dull and brig down the aesthetic appeal of your bathroom.

Below we'll take a look at a few of the many ways you can keep your bathroom taps and mixers looking sparkling for as long as possible. The more you keep on top of cleaning your taps, the more joy they'll bring you and the prouder you'll be of showing off your bathroom.

The right cleaning implement

The first thing to think about is what you are happy using to clean your chrome taps. Sponges, rags or microfibre cloths are common ways to keep taps clean as they are soft and non-abrasive.

Dirt on chrome taps can be watermarks, soap, fingerprints or toothpaste splatter, so choose whichever cleaning implement you think will remove the stains and which you feel comfortable using. A good recommendation is to use a damp cloth to remove any stains, then buff with a dry microfibre cloth.

The more regularly your schedule in a tap cleaning session, the easier it will be each time to keep clean. It's when you allow dirt to build up and fester on a chrome tap over a period of months that it can become quite an effort to keep clean.

The cleaning options

Below are various different options you can try to rid your chrome bathroom taps of unsightly stains. You may have a favourite or see one you haven't tried that you are interested in. Just like the implement you use to clean the taps, the cleaning products you use should also be something you will use on a regular basis. There's no point buying materials that you won't bother using, so keep it simple.

  • Soap and water - Old school, but always works. Give the taps a good sudding with the chrome, then rinse and buff dry.
  • Vinegar - Many shop bought cleaning solutions have vinegar as the main ingredient, with some additives to tae the string smell away. Vinegar is great at cleaning chrome as it can remove the stains and leave the surface of your taps looking incredibly shiny.
  • Wet wipes - Anti-bacterial wipes are an excellent cleaning product and you may already have them in your bathroom. Being able to see the dirt being lifted onto the wipes is especially satisfying.
  • Baking soda and lemon - Another traditional cleaning combination, these two ingredients work particularly well in removing stains caused by limescale, so could be a very good solution if you can see an chalky residue on your chrome taps.
  • Coca-Cola - If you've ever seen how shiny a coin left in Coke becomes, you'll know the cleaning qualities of Coke. Add a little to your cloth and see if it gets rid of some stubborn stains on your chrome taps.
