Essential Oils in Baths

One of the most relaxing things you can do is to take a warm bath on your own in the comfort of your bathroom.

Escaping from the stresses of the outside world, like work or mobile phones, by having a bath can be an excellent way of removing stress and tension from your mind and body.

Introducing aromatherapy into the mix by adding essential oils to your bath can be a superb way of supercharging your relaxation. But can you just thrown any essential oil into you bath, or is it a little more complex?

Don't forget a carrier oil

We've all heard about the benefits of essential oils such a Eucalyptus or Cedarwood, however, they are distilled from the aromatic roots, leaves and bark of plants.

If you take your chosen oil and directly rub it into your skin, you are highly likely to feel red and irritated rather than relaxed and chilled out.

In order to come into contact with essential oils without any nasty side effects, you need a 'carrier oil' to dilute the essential oil which ensures you feel the benefits without irritation.

Popular carrier oils are coconut oil, avocado oil or jojoba oil, which all come from the nuts, seeds and kernels of plants.

Get the carrier-essential oil ratio right

So, you can put pure essential oils into your bath, but always make sure they're accompanied by a carrier oil. The general recipe is 1 tablespoon of carrier oil to 3 - 6 drops of your preferred essential oil.

Stick to this ratio and you'll ensure that you have an incredibly relaxing bath free from irritation.

Suitable essential oils for your bath include Frankincense, Myrrh, Lavender, Jasmine, Patchouli, Eucalyptus, Cedarwood, Rose, Chamomile and Lemongrass.
