DIY bathroom tile designs and ideas

One of the most fun things you can do when redecorating your bathroom is choosing your tiles. Getting the right tiles on the wall and on the floor can absolutely transform a bathroom and is a great opportunity to put your own personal stamp on your decor.

In this article we cover a few tips for you to consider so that you can make the right choices when tiling your bathroom.

Decide how much you need

Before even setting out to choose your tiles, consider how much wall space you are going to cover with tiles.

Some people choose to paint their bathroom walls and have tiles only in the shower cubicle and around the basin. Others choose to tile their entire bathroom.

Measure what you need in square metres and only go with what you can afford. Don't overspend on tiles if that means you have to cut back on quality elsewhere.

Get an extra box or two in case of breakages. Fancy tile designs are often discontinued, so get a little more than you need of your tiles are fairly unique.

Keep it fairly simple

3 types of bathroom tiles

Many bathroom fitters have a rule of three when it comes to bathroom tiles. This basically means don't use more than 3 different styles of tile in your bathroom, otherwise things could look too fussy and overcomplicated.

It's likely you'll be tiling your wall and the floor, so a good rule of thumb is to use the same type of tile on the floor and a maximum of two different types on the wall.

The second type of tile on the wall should not be overused and should mainly be used as a feature tile to accent and complement the main tile.

Keep small bathrooms light

White brick tiles

This is not a hard and fast rule as it's possible to find plenty of small bathrooms decorated with dark tiles that look absolutely fantastic.

However, if you're not particularly arty or creative then a safe choice is to choose light-coloured tiles for small bathrooms.

Light colours (and well placed mirrors) will help give the impression of space and airiness, often very important in a small and steamy bathroom that doesn't have any windows.

Light coloured tiles also help give the impression of cleanliness and minimalism, a style particularly popular for bathrooms and ensuites.

Consider the size of the tiles

Tiles come in a wide variety of sizes, so this is an important consideration when making your choice.

Tile size and shape can have a big effect on the appearance of your room and can work wonders in giving the appearance of space.

Diagonal floor tiles can help to make a room feel wider, particularly useful in a narrow room. Also think about long, plank tiles on the floor as they can add a nice texture and variety from what you choose to go on your walls.

Very large wall tiles are particularly popular at the moment as they can create the feeling of space and often shorten the amount of time needed to be spent tiling. However, they can be slippery on the floor, so mosaic tiles are often used in wetroom-style bathrooms for extra grip underfoot.

Extra atmosphere and enjoyment

Getting the right tiles to match your personal preference will make a huge difference in the atmosphere of your bathroom.

Being able to lay back and relax in your luxury whirlpool bath will be that much more enjoyable knowing that your bathroom looks exactly the way you want it to.

Your bathroom should be a place that you can spend long and relaxing periods of time in again and again, so it's important you take your time at the beginning to make the right decorative choices.
