Difference between left hand and right hand bathtubs

Difference between left hand and right hand bathtubs

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 26th October 2021

One of the most common ways we like to maximise the use of space in a bathroom with limited floor area is by installing a shower-bath. These beautiful inventions allow us the convenience of having all the luxury of a full bath while maintaining the convenience of a shower. If you don't have space for a separate bath tub and shower cubicle, then installing a shower-bath is a great way of having the best of both worlds.

You'll find with many of our shower-bath combos that you have the option of choosing 'left hand' (LH) or right hand hand (RH) tubs. These types of tubs have a slightly larger part on one side to allow more room for showering. As a result, they are often referred to a P-shape or L-shape baths due to their similarities to the shapes of these letters. You can choose to have the larger, showering end to the left or to the right in accordance with the space available in your bathroom.

Left hand whirlpool bathtubs

The bathtub above is a Luna Elle Left Hand Tub of the L-shape variety. You can tell it is a left hand oriented tub because, if you stand at the bottom of the bath looking forward towards the taps, you can see that the wider portion of the bath protrudes out to the left, with the shower screen on top of it.

The edges of the wider part of the bath are straight, rather than curved, and so this style of shower-bath is referred to as an L-shape bath.

Above is another view of the Luna Elle Left Hand Tub from the narrower end of the bath. You can see the wider area extending out the the left. Another giveaway s that the plug hole is also towards the left of the floor.

Above is a Celsius whirlpool shower bath made by one of the top spa-bath manufacturers, Carron. You can see this is a left hand bath because of the bulbous end and the shower screen being located on the left hand side of the bath. In this case however you can see that the protruding side has a curved, rather than straight edge, meaning this is referred to as a P-shape bath.

Right hand whirlpool bath tubs

Here is the right hand version of the Luna Elle bath, as evidenced by the shower screen and wider part of the bath oriented to the right hand side.

Again, looking at the Luna Elle Right Hand Bath from the narrower end, you can see the wider area and the plug hole sticking out to the right of the bath.

Above is the right hand version of the popular Carron Celsius bath. You can see the extended area and the shower screen situation towards the right of the bath, indicating that this is a right hand bath. As the curved, extended area is on the right, this looks like the more traditional letter P that gives this style of shower bath its P-shape name.
