Baths vs showers: which is more hygienic?

Baths vs showers: which is more hygienic?

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 23rd February 2021

When it comes to bathing or showering, both are incredibly hygienic and will leave you feeling refreshed, with neither being significantly better than the other.

That being said, there are some small differences between having a bath or a shower that are worthy of your consideration and could affect which you choose to take in terms of your health.

Skin health

Sitting in a bath for an extended period of time can feel incredibly relaxing and it can be great if you have certain skin conditions, like eczema.

However, it can also dry out your skin and remove the natural oils that keeps our skin feeling healthy. A shower doesn't expose the skin to as much water as we don't immerse ourselves in the water like we do in a bath.

The fact that we tend to take quicker showers than baths also helps ensure our skin doesn't become too dry.

Improved sleep

Taking a hot bath about an hour before going to bed has been shown by some studies to help people to fall asleep more quickly.

This is due to the fact that a hot bath raises our body temperature and the process of cooling down helps us to feel sleepy. So while a hot bath right before bed is not recommended, doing it an hour or two before you plan to go to sleep can help you drop off more quickly.

Easing joint pain

For those with joint or muscular discomfort, a nice soak in the tub can help to take the weight off and ease pain.

Hydrotherapy and thermomassage has long been a way of using water to reduce the effects of joint and muscle pain without placing strain on the body.

General cleanliness

If you don't have any particular health complaints then short, warm showers once-a-day are the quickest and easiest way to keep clean.

The most important point however is nothing to do with the bath vs shower debate. It's actually how clean you keep your bathroom and washing facilities.

Dirt, dust, limescale, mould and mildew are common issues that need to be dealt with in bathrooms and regular cleaning helps keep on top of this.

Ensuring your bathing facilities are clean and well-ventilated will mean that your bathroom is a nice place to be whether you take a bath or a shower.
