Are whirlpool tubs sanitary and how to clean them properly

Whirlpool baths are a fantastic addition to any bathroom and really succeed in creating the ideal place to relax in the comfort of your own home. That being said, just like other parts of your bathroom, whirlpool baths do need cleaning on a regular basis in order to keep them feeling great and working smoothly and efficiently. In this article we explain how to keep your whirlpool bath nice and clean.

Why clean a whirlpool bath?

If your whirlpool bath is in regular use, you can probably imagine that it will need cleaning at some point. Hairs, skin and bits of other dust and debris can get left behind after we've used the bath, so it's important to keep on top of cleaning and stop dirt from limiting your enjoyment of the bath.

It's important to note that cleaning a whirlpool bath is slightly different than cleaning a regular shower or bathtub, though the process is still really easy!

Whirlpool baths contain chrome-plated jets that are fixed to the shell of the bath and they are responsible for pulling in and pushing out the water. These jets are what create a unique whirlpool bath experience and should be considered as vital components of your bath that need to be kept clean.

Cleaning the whirlpool jets

The best way to clean your chrome whirlpool jets is to remove them from their recessed holes in the shell of the bath.

You can do this by inserting a small, flat head screwdriver in between the jet and the chrome housing. With a bit and pressure and leverage, you should be able to gently prize the jet out and remove it with your fingers.

Clean the jet in some hot soapy water to remove any debris and dry it off with a paper towel or piece of kitchen roll.

Then press the jet back into the hole and it should click into place. Repeat this process with all the jets in your bath and you can consider the jets well cleaned!

Cleaning the whirlpool bath tub

By following the simple steps below, you will be able to easily stay on top of the cleaning of your tub. Obviously the frequently of your cleaning routine depends on how much you use your bath, however we recommend cleaning your tub and your jets at least once a month.

When deciding to clean our tub you can either leave the water in after you've just finished a bath or fill the bath with warm water to a level 2 inches above the highest jets

You can then drop in a sterilising tab or a measure of whirlpool cleaner into the warm water.

Allow the whirlpool to run for about 5 minutes, then turn off the whirlpool system and drain the water.

If you need to you can finish off by rinsing the bath's surfaces with water.

Avoid generic bath oils and salts

A whirlpool bath is not a cheap piece of equipment to install in your bathroom, so keeping on top of the cleaning and maintenance will help prolong its life and enable it to continue to give you a highly satisfying bathing experience long into the future.

An extra tip is to use whirlpool-friendly oils and low-foaming bath salts to keep your whirlpool system running efficiently. Some generic bath oils can clog up the pipework after a time and regular bubble bath can become over-foamed due to the intense water jets!
