6 Energy Saving Tips for the Bathroom

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 24th April 2018

Whatever the weather, now is always the ideal time to ensure that your home is as energy efficient as it can be, but more often than not the bathroom can get overlooked. There are a variety of ways you can make sure your bathroom is more efficient, which can help to reduce your electric and water bills as well as helping to protect the environment too. Here are six ways to make your bathroom more energy efficient.

Repair leaking taps

Dripping tap It’s important to repair any leaking taps as soon as possible, a hot water tap that constantly drips can waste enough water to fill half a bath in just one week. So, ensure that you turn off your taps fully and if they do start to leak fix them straight away. A dripping or leaking tap is usually a sign that the washer needs replacing, which can easily be done by yourself.

Choose water saving taps

Leaking tap It’s amazing just how much water can be wasted when brushing your teeth or your face, so make sure you always turn the tap off when doing either of these things. Some taps now include a water saving cartridge, which allows you to select a full or a 50% reduced flow rate helping to significantly reduce your water usage. Sensor taps are ideal too, as they only operate when your hand is moved over or touches the sensor to activate the water and after a few seconds the water turns off again.

Shower rather than bathe

A shower Using the shower rather than the bath can help to cut your water bills as well as your carbon emissions as it requires more energy to heat the hot water required for a bath. Having a shower uses approximately 20% of the hot water that is needed for a bath, which is ideal for reducing your energy usage.

Insulation

Cavity Wall Insulation Ensuring that your loft is well insulated is the most cost effective way to reduce your energy bills as up to 25% of your home’s heat can escape through the roof. Loft insulation is quick to do and can usually be done in a day, which means that you can enjoy the feeling of a warmer bathroom.

Save water when flushing

Frog on toilet When you flush your toilet it means that the water has to be purified and pumped round again, all of which can waste a lot of water and energy. Choosing a toilet with a dual flush cistern can really help to cut your water usage, when you flush with the reduced water option. Some new toilets are designed with water efficiency in mind which is ideal for reducing the amount of water used when flushing. If you have an older toilet placing a brick in the cistern takes up space, which reduces the water needed to fill it.

Switch to LED lighting

LED lighting Changing your energy consuming halogen spotlights in your bathroom to LED lighting provides a more efficient way in which to illuminate your bathroom space and can reduce your energy usage by up to 80%, helping to cut your electric bills and lower your carbon emissions. Most LED spotlights are retrofit, meaning they will just simply replace your standard halogen lamps. LED spotlights also light up instantly and are available in a choice of colours to suit your lighting requirements.
