5 ways to save water with an eco-friendly bathroom

5 ways to save water with an eco-friendly bathroom

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 6th July 2021

It's estimated that the average person in the UK uses around 140 litres of water per day, which may come as a surprise to many of you reading this. We're often guilty of taking our water supplies for granted, whether it be for drinking or washing so perhaps it's no surprise that our individual water consumption is so high.

Our bathrooms are the place in the home where we use the most amount of water, so in this article, we look at 5 things we can change to use less water and be more environmentally conscious.

1. Opt for a water-saving bathtub

The average 1700 x 700mm bath holds up to 190 litres of water. However it is possible to get luxury baths that use much less water without compromising the relaxing qualities of a nice long soak.

At Luna Spas, we understand that a bath has to be a luxury experience; that’s why we sell a range of luxury, water-saving whirlpool baths that create a spa-like experience at home. And while it is true that a bath will use more water than a shower, you don’t have to waste water to enjoy a bath. We have a range of eco whirlpool baths that combine design and resource to create baths that use up to 31% less water and will see you saving water in the long run.

Our eco-baths have two straightforward features that help to reduce the amount of water they use:

  • Our eco-baths are shallower than their traditional counterparts, although they don’t noticeably look smaller.
  • These baths also have a deeper angle on the back. This also helps to bring down the volume of water used, again with virtually no noticeable difference in appearance.

If you think you could reduce your water usage by installing a water-saving bath, feel free to check out our eco whirlpool range.

2. Install a thermostatic shower

A thermostatic shower valve helps to control and regulate the temperature of the water that comes out of your shower. In effect, these valves help to avoid massive fluctuations in water temperature so you don't accidentally scold yourself with hot water or get a nasty shock from freezing water. If the thermostat detects a problem with either the hot or cold water flow, it will shut down to avoid you getting showered with really hot or cold water.

While thermostatic showers were designed with safety as their priority, an added benefit is that they are actually very good for using less water. because the temperature is automatically adjusted, you don't have to waste time and water twiddling the taps looking for the right temperature. Not only does this help to save water, but it increases the quality and experience of your shower, meaning the days of worrying about getting scalding or freezing water each tie you switch on the shower are long gone

3. Switch to a single lever mixer tap

Much like the convenience provided by a thermostatic shower valve, a single lever mixer tap allows you to find the perfect mix of hot and cold water when using the basin or filling your bath. Rather than wasting water and time with two separate taps, a mixer tap allows you to flick the water flow on or off with ease, usually at the exact temperature you want. This helps with saving water and, again, helps improve the standard of your bathroom experience.

Luna Spas offer a wide variety of basin and bath filler valves (also referred to as taps), to suit all bathroom interiors. Whether you are looking for stylish taps which fit nicely on top of you tub or a single tap to conveniently take pride of place on your wall, Luna Spas has you covered with a small range of top quality products.

4. Add a dual flush toilet

If you don't currently have one in your home, you've probably sed a dual flush toilet at some point in your life. Most commonly recognised by being located on top of the cistern, a dual flush toilet has a double button that delivers different amounts of water depending on which one you press.

One half of the button is designed for liquid waste and will dispense less water to get rid of the waste than a typical full flush. The other half of the button will dispense the full amount of water and is designed to get rid of more solid waste.

Dual flush toilets are increasingly common because of their water-saving capabilities and are a fantastic way to allocate the right amount of water for dealing with our waste products!

5. Fix any toilet leaks

Like any component that gets used all the time, toilets can spring leaks if the connection from the toilet to the pipework comes loose or degrades. This is especially common among old toilets in bathrooms that have not been update for a long time.

Not only does a leaking toilet waste a lot of precious water, it can also cause severe structural damage to your property if left unfixed. Leaking water can be incredibly destructive and can lead to very expensive repairs, so it's worth taking action and calling a professional plumber immediately if you see any unexplained water on the floor around your toilet.
