Using a bath for recovery

Using a bath for recovery

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 17th May 2022

Getting into a hot bath after exercise or experiencing pain can be a great way to ease the symptoms and help your body feel more relaxed. Using baths for recovery goes all the way back to the Romans, who placed huge importance on the healing powers of hydrotherapy, as evidenced in such places as Bath and Pompeii.

Often involving water temperatures of between 32 - 36°C, hydrotherapy is particularly effective in treating joint pain. Many who have had joint replacements and or suffering from osteoarthritis have been reported to especially benefit from this type of water-based therapy, but it also can be beneficial for many different types of arthritis.

Hydrotherapy has also been used to the symptoms of stress, fibromyalgia, muscle pain and improving flexibility.

Relieving muscle and joint pain

Bathing in a warm bath can be a superb way of moving aching limbs and stiff body parts. The water helps to support the weight of your limbs, allowing you to move in ways that are simply not possible out of the water and helps to keep things very low-impact.

Even simply being in the bath and remaining stationary, the warm water can help with reducing inflammation, joint pain and stress.

Better blood flow

Doing some moderate exercise has long been associated with improving blood circulation, which in turn helps to warm up the extremities of your body and assist with repair and recovery.

Getting in a hot bath will also improve blood flow by relaxing your arteries, veins and capillaries. This is fantastic for your circulation, your muscles and your skin due to oxygenated blood flowing around all parts of your body. Better blood flow can therefore reduce the problems of cold hands and feet.

Improving skin and complexion

You'll have noticed that when you've been eating poorly or having interrupted sleep that your skin suffers and becomes more dull. Toxins and stress take their toll and can result in you looking less than your best.

Having a soak in a hot bath can increase oxygen intake and accelerate the process of the toxins in your body being drawn out of your skin. This oxygenation and improved blood flow can give your skin a much cleaner feeling and a healthier glow.
