Tips for bathrooms without windows

Tips for bathrooms without windows

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 8th December 2020

With an increase in squeezing in toilets and en-suites for use in the home, it's very likely that you have some sort of bathroom that doesn't have a window.

While finding room for this extra bathroom provides a huge amount of benefits, a windowless bathroom does come with challenges that you need to keep an eye on.

In this article, we'll take a look at some handy tips and things to keep in mind when it comes to making the most of your bathroom without windows.

Extractor fan

Because you don't have the option opening a window to let out hot, moist air, it's important that you have some other form of ventilation to keep air circulating.

Incorporating a good quality extractor fan into you bathroom will ensure that the atmosphere remains fresh and will help to prevent a build up of mould and damp smells.

There are a variety of options, including how fast the air is extracted from the room, how the fan is switched on and how noisy it is when it's in operation.

You'll need one suitable for your budget and room size and you should always seek the advice of a qualified professional instead of installing one yourself.

Heated towel rail

Even if you install a good extractor fan in your windowless bathroom, if it isn't heated well enough, you still might get a problem with condensation and mould.

This can often be sorted out by adding a well-proportioned heated towel rail on a suitable wall. A good quality towel rail will help to get heat into the room and dry out your damp towels meaning there's less moisture floating about in the room.

Dehumidifier

Because mould is one of the major obstacles of having a windowless bathroom, you might also consider the option of adding a dehumidifier into the room.

While these do take up a little bit of extra floor space, bathroom dehumidifiers don't have to be huge and they are a great way of removing excess moisture from the air. A perfect compliment to extractor fans and heated towel rails in the battle against mould.

Most modern dehumidifiers come with easily detachable water tanks, making emptying them easier. Additional options like timers and quiet modes are also commonplace so you'll be able to get one that is compatible with your lifestyle.

Quality lighting

As you don't have the benefit of natural light, it's important your windowless bathroom is well lit. Not only do you need to see what you're doing, but it will also help disguise the fact that you don't actually have a window.

Recessed spotlights, a backlit mirror and LEDs on your furniture will help ensure you make up for a lack of natural light and don't cast shadows in awkward places.

Incorporating plenty of mirrors will also help brighten the room and avoid falling into the trap of a dark and dingy bathroom.
