How to clean bathroom tiles

How to clean bathroom tiles

Because your bathroom is one of the busiest rooms in the house, it can very quickly get dirty and look below its best.

As the speed with which a bathroom can get a bit grubby is often quite disheartening, it can be easy to just do the bare minimum of cleaning and let other parts of the bathroom continue to degrade.

These 'other parts' usually include the wall and floor tiles as well as the grouting, which can be a particular trap for mould and grime. Fortunately however, dirty tiling is not a reason to despair and worry about renovating your whole bathroom, as they can usually be brightened up and restored to as good as new with a little old fashioned elbow grease.

Cleaning bathroom wall tiles

If you live in a hard water area then you might have a build up of limescale on the wall tiles in your bathroom, particularly around the basin and bath/shower area. If this is the case then using a limescale-specific cleaning product like Viakal will be a great way of getting rid of the unsightly calcium deposits and bringing back the shine to your tiles. (Viakal is not suitable for use on natural stone such as marble).

Alternatively, using a generic bathroom cleaner will do the job on wall tiles and make them sparkling clean again. You'd be surprised at how just giving wall tiles a good clean makes a huge difference to the overall appearance of a bathroom.

WHen you've cleaned your tiles with a cleaning product and a sponge or scourer, be sure to remember to give the surfaces a rinse with clean water to remove any cleaning product and limescale residue fora super smooth finish.

Cleaning bathroom floor tiles

Bathroom Floor Tiles

The tiles on the floor of your bathroom are prone to getting particularly dirty due to being exposed to water and feet and the associated grime debris such as hair, skin, dust and other dirt.

When cleaning the bathroom floor, it's quite often a good idea to start when it's dry as this gives you the opportunity to give the floor a comprehensive sweep or vacuum. Trying to do this when the floor is wet is a thankless task and usually makes the problem worse.

Once you've removed any loose dirt from the floor, you can actually follow the instructions above if you've noticed and limescale build up. If this isn't necessary then giving the floor a mop with some warm water and a small bit of floor cleaner should bring up the floor tiles nicely.

If you've got a steam cleaner or steam mop then you might find this job even easier. Using the power of steam, you mop will glide across the surface a lift up any dirt leaving you with a lovely clean finish. Try and do clean the floor having removed as many accessories and furniture as possible to get the best finish.

As with the wall tiles, you'll be amazed at how much better the floor looks once it's had a deep clean - it may even make the room look slightly bigger!

Cleaning bathroom tile grout

Mouldy Tiles

You could have the cleanest bathroom wall and floor tiles in the world but if you've got dirty grouting then the whole finish of the room is completely undermined. Because of the high humidity of bathrooms, it's common for mould to attach itself to the white grouting, making it look dark, patchy and discoloured. Black or grey grouting often makes this less of an issue, but even darker grouting will still need cleaning from time to time.

If your grouting is suffering from the ugly appearance of mould then there are dedicated grout cleaners that you can put of and then scrub with a toothbrush. This is hard work but if you're willing to put in the effort then it's an effective way of getting your grouting clean. There's also several brands of white grout paint available that can be painted on and will bring your grout back up to scratch.

An excellent alternative to this hard work is to buy some cotton wool balls. Pour some bleach into a jug and then drop in a cotton ball so that it become saturated with bleach. Roll the ball into a sausage shape and press it against part of the grout that is covered in mould and make sure as much of the cotton is touching the wall as possible. If it's saturated with bleach then it should stick to the wall without falling off.

Repeat this process as many times as you need so that the worst parts of your mouldy grout are all covered with the bleach covered cotton 'sausages'. Leave for 24 hours and then when removed, you should see that the mould has been removed and the grout is back to its best. This tip will also work on mouldy bathroom sealant too.
