How best to save water & save money

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 28th August 2018

Given the current climate, we are all looking for ways in which we can save ourselves a bit of cash here and there. A great way to save yourself money (and help out the environment) is by monitoring the way in which you use and consume water. In Britain, we waste an incredible amount of water with a recent survey revealing a massive 72% of us underestimating the 7.5 litres that flow from a tap per minute. By being more conscientious about your home’s water usage you could create a significant saving on your water bills!
  • Use only what you require
  • Fix the leak
  • Install energy efficient appliances

Use only what you require There are plenty of things you can do to cut back on your water usage just by changing the way you think; they’re free and save you money, it’s a no-brainer!
  • This is really simple stuff that a lot of us are guilty of doing, including myself, and that is letting our taps run excessively. By simply turning the tap off while brushing our teeth or shaving faces etc you could save an incredible amount on water.
  • Only use dishwashers and washing machines when there is a full load, or use the appropriate settings designed for smaller loads.
  • Try and time your shower; you’d be surprised at the amount of water that makes it’s way down the plug hole while you linger. Try cutting your showers down to about 5 minutes and if you want a bath be sure to limit how high you fill it.
  • Displacing water in your toilet tank reduces the amount you use to flush it, without affecting the effectiveness. Simply get an old water bottle, put a bit of sand or some stones in it, fill with water and place in the tank. The stones etc help keep it in position so as not to interfere with the working parts. Try experimenting with different sized bottle and see what works best for you.
Fix the leak
  • Leaky taps and toilets are a sure fire way to waste money. A dripping tap is often relatively easy to fix.
  • You can easily identify a toilet leak by dropping some food colouring in the tank and waiting 15 minutes. If there’s any colour in the bowl after the 15 minutes, you have a leak! Fixing it may be easier than you might first think as well.
Install energy efficient appliances While these installments will cost you to begin with, they will pay themselves off given time and will help you to save money on your water bills.
  • Installing a dual flush cistern gives you more control over how much water you use when using your toilet and is a great money saver.
  • Water saving shower heads are an innovative way to save you up to 75% on water usage while still delivering great performance.
  • Wherever you can, choose products that come with a high energy efficiency rating for the best performance and efficiency you can get.
All of these changes, big or small, will work towards lowering your your bills, saving you money and will add a positive contribution to the environment. Remember, if you are not 100% confident about fixing something, it’s always better to get a professional in!
