Best budget bathroom designs and ideas 2020

It's absolutely possible for you to redesign your bathroom without spending a small fortune.

While most home design and makeover shows would have you believe that everything must be removed and replaced in order to achieve bathroom satisfaction, this is definitely not the case.

In fact, there are many simple things you can do to transform your bathroom that doesn't require you to bust your budget. We'll show you how in this article.

1. Paint your walls

One of the most underrated ways to bring your bathroom back to life is by simply giving your walls a lick of paint.

Because of the humid conditions of bathrooms, paintwork can start to become faded and discoloured. Dull paintwork can cause your room to look a bit tired so it's amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do.

Painting your walls white is a fantastic way of brightening up the room and it's something that can be done cheaply, fairly quickly and without much DIY knowledge.

If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you could paint one wall a different colour from the other three, creating a feature wall and adding an exciting splash of colour.

2. Choose cheap but expensive-looking materials

If some features of your bathroom are really too far gone to rescue, then there are some materials you can choose that look much more expensive than they actually are.

A great example is that of flooring. While having a wooden floor in your bathroom can look fantastically rustic, it can also be expensive, time consuming and impractical.

Instead, consider some luxury vinyl flooring than replicates wooden flooring. There's some great faux-wooden vinyl out there that looks very convincing for a fraction of the price of the real thing. Plus it's easier to keep clean.

If replacing countertops then choosing faux-granite laminate or quartz ones can also look great, giving a feeling of luxury but without the high cost.

3. Replace chromework

Making some small changes to the traditionally shiny parts of your bathroom can make a massive difference and don't have to cost a lot.

Over time, come chrome-plated fixtures like taps, shower heads, light fittings and toilet roll holders can become scratched and dull. Replacing these fittings with brand new ones can give you weary old bathroom a brand new lease of life.

If you currently don't have any chrome-plated fixtures or if everything is mismatched, consider a refit with all-chrome replacements. You'll be amazed at the way it brings the room together, creating a stylish sense of order and uniformity.

4. Have a spring clean

If your bathroom furniture and decor is basically in good condition, you might be pleasantly surprised at what a big difference a good cleaning and decluttering session can make.

Pull everything out of the cupboards, surfaces and the floor and set about your bathroom with some good quality cleaning materials.

Polishing up chromework, cleaning windows and scrubbing grouting are just a few of the things you can clean to make your bathroom look better. Removing water marks, getting rid of mould and throwing out old shampoo bottles can have a massive impact on the aesthetics of your bathroom.

A clean, uncluttered bathroom can create a lovely organised and minimalist feel, making you fall in love with your bathroom again using effort rather than finances.

5. Speak with your plumber

If you are set on having a brand new bathroom but are a little concerned with how much it's going to cost, make sure you get several bathroom fitters round to give you a quote.

Don't just go with the first person who visits, ideally get at least three for comparison. Speak with all three about your budget and expectations and don't be afraid to ask for pictures of previous projects they've worked on.

Once you have chosen a plumber to do the work, don't be afraid to speak with them about exactly what you want. Go through each component of your planned bathroom and ask for comparisons and explanations on what makes a low, medium and high budget example.

By doing this, you'll know exactly what you're getting and how much it will cost, so there will be no nasty finanicial surprises. It will also help to establish what's most important to you in your new bathroom, opening up the option of saving money on something unimportant while splashing out on a feature that gets you excited!
