A few cheap ways to improve your home

A few cheap ways to improve your home

By Benjamin Clarke | Published on 11th September 2018

All you have to do is to turn on the TV news and you will be bombarded with bad news about the economy. 'Doom. Gloom. Brexit. Inflation. Sterling plummets. FTSE100 record lows.' You get the idea. Don’t panic though. You will be pleased to know that you can still improve your home without ending up with an empty wallet. You may have to set realistic goals regarding your home improvement jobs but this article discusses a few cheap ways to spruce up your little slice of home.
  • Paint for victory
  • Save for the future
  • Defend your home from cold
  • Keep calm and carry on

Paint for victory

A lick of paint always does the trick when you want to improve a home without having to spend too much money. Painting a house inside and out just freshens up the old place and stops it looking tired and jaded. You can stick with the colours you have at the moment or you may want to create a whole new colour scheme. Just by creating a feature wall will make a room feel new and fresh. Even if you just paint the column radiators you can make the space feel more vibrant. If you are about to sell your home a good paint job could add a bit of extra dosh to the asking price. Just by making the effort with your paint brush and a few tins of paint could bring in a few extra thousand quid.

Save for the future

There are a number of home improvement jobs you could do that will save you money in the long term. Such as fitting PV solar panels or electric underfloor heating. If you have any of these fitted you find that over time they will probably pay for themselves. Indeed with the solar panels you could earn a tax free income and cut your energy bills. A family home might save hundreds of pounds a year by fitting solar panels. Underfloor heating when fitted could save you money because as it radiates heat in a consistent way you can run it at a lower temperature than conventional radiators.

Defend your home from cold

At the moment the government are offering generous grants so that you can insulate your loft and walls. You should look in to taking advantage of this scheme as no one knows how long the powers that be are going to keep it going. It may not cost you a penny to have this insulation installed and it could save you a fortune. The country has carbon emission targets to hit and if more people kept more heat inside their homes the less fuel they will need to burn. As well as helping to save the planet you will also give less money to the energy companies. By doing this you help the nation meet its target, you help the globe and most importantly you help your family’s finances.

Keep calm and carry on

Unlike flapping around like a headless chicken, it's always important to focus and make sure you know what you are doing. If you are not sure that you can do any of these jobs you should hire a professional as it will end up costing you a lot more in the long run.
